Moissanite vs. Diamond vs. Lab-Grown Diamond
Moissanite vs. Diamond vs. Lab-Grown Diamond
Everything you need to know before buying — explained honestly, without jargon.
When you're spending real money on jewelry, you deserve a straight answer. This page breaks down the three most popular gemstone options in 2024 — natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds, and moissanite — so you can decide with confidence what is actually right for you.
Spoiler: all three can be absolutely stunning. The difference is in sparkle character, price, sourcing, and what matters to you.
What are they, exactly?
Natural Diamond
Formed deep in the Earth over billions of years. Extracted through mining operations — a process that has well-documented environmental and ethical concerns. Sold through a long supply chain of wholesalers, polishers, and retailers, each adding margin.
Lab-Grown Diamond
Chemically, physically, and optically identical to a natural diamond — same carbon crystal structure, same hardness (10/10 Mohs), same fire and brilliance. Grown in a controlled laboratory environment in weeks rather than billions of years. Typically costs 70–90% less than an equivalent natural diamond and carries IGI or GIA certification.
Moissanite
Originally discovered in a meteor crater in 1893 by Nobel Prize winner Henri Moissan. Natural moissanite is extraordinarily rare — all gem-quality moissanite today is lab-created. Composed of silicon carbide, it is the second hardest gemstone in the world (9.25/10 Mohs) and has a higher refractive index than diamond, meaning it throws more rainbow-like fire. It is not a diamond — and it does not try to be. It is its own gemstone with its own unique character.

Which one is right for you?
Choose Moissanite if…
- You want the most sparkle per baht — period.
- You want a 1–2 CT look without a 1–2 CT price tag.
- You care about ethical and eco-friendly sourcing.
- You want to spend smart and invest the savings elsewhere — honeymoon, home, experiences.
- You love unique rainbow fire that stands out from the crowd.
Choose Lab-Grown Diamond if…
- You or your partner specifically want a diamond — composition matters to you.
- You want an IGI/GIA certificate that says "diamond."
- You want diamond's clean, white sparkle (less rainbow fire than moissanite).
- Budget is flexible but you still want to avoid mined stone markups.
Choose Natural Diamond if…
- Tradition and sentiment around a "real mined" stone is important to you or your family.
- You view it as a long-term asset or heirloom.
- Budget is not a primary concern.

Common myths — busted
To the naked eye, a well-cut moissanite is indistinguishable from a diamond — most jewelers cannot tell the difference without equipment. Its higher refractive index often makes it look more brilliant than a diamond of the same size.
False. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically and physically identical to mined diamonds. The FTC (US Federal Trade Commission) ruled in 2018 that "real diamond" includes lab-grown diamonds. IGI and GIA certify them as diamonds.
On average, a natural diamond loses 50–70% of its retail value the moment you leave the store. They are not investment assets for most buyers. A reputable financial advisor would not recommend diamonds as an investment.
At 9.25 Mohs hardness, moissanite is harder than all other gemstones except diamond. It will not scratch from daily contact. It does not cloud, yellow, or lose brilliance over decades of wear.
That rule was invented by a De Beers marketing campaign in the 1930s. There is no rule. The right ring is the one that makes your partner smile — at any price.
